01/19/14 – Did the DMC Maintain Charity Care? (Crains Detroit)

Marjorie Mitchell, board member of the Coalition to Protect Detroit Health Care, said she thinks DMC has consistently reduced uncompensated care over the years, including when Vanguard took over, based on anecdotal information she has received from former employees. “We have had meetings with Legacy DMC (officials) and haven’t been able to get the metrics on charity care. They tell us that information is confidential,” said Mitchell, who also is executive director of MichUHCAN, a community group providing education for people to enroll in Obamacare. “There is no good way for the people of Detroit to find out how (the sale) has affected charity care,” she said. “They do not show us charity care provided.”

10/22/12 – Open Letter to Vanguard/DMC Legacy Board: Obligations to Low Income Individuals

Our disappointment with the report is in the lack of data and specificity to support the glowing assertions of Vanguard/DMC’s efforts to inform their indigent and low income community of its new and expanded Charity Care and Financial Assistance policies and the outcomes for these efforts. Access to solid data is necessary for citizens of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan to be able to adequately evaluate if the intent and language of the sale agreement.

05/06/10 – MOSES: Community Involvement in Health Care

When decisions are made that will influence health care in Detroit and Southeast Michigan for generations to come – all stakeholders should be at the table. The community is a significant, perhaps the significant, stakeholder in decisions regarding the future of the DMC.
